I have been reading up on what betteries are best. The 6 Volt model L16 keeps popping up as the most reliable and longest lasting. Hold on, wait just a second please. I am still picking myself up off the floor after seeing the price per battery. The cheapest I fould is $227.00 for just one. Unfortunately it is at the lower end of the amp/hour scale. The really juicy ones are running about $357.00. Yeah, I want those, about a dozen please. Anybody know where to get these cheaper? Are they worth it? They claim the batteries will last from 7 to 10 years. Is that true? Holy poor house Batman. I mean if I start buying these I may have to mortage the house. I am running a Wagan 5000/10000 watt inverter powering all the lights in the house and most small appliances. How many of these Bad Boy Batteries will I need?

Moe got a Truck load of 2 volt batteries. But not for $357. His price is was scarey !

Yeah I read that the 2 volts were even better but Lord All Mighty you have to have a lot of them and the price, as a good Christian man, it would be obscene to mention out in public. I get all queasy thinkin bout it.

Do you really think the $357 model will last 6-7 times longer then the 6 volt batteries at Costco or Walmart. And if you screw them up [lord knows none of us have done that] which ones would you rather have. And can you buy them locally so they are easily warrantied in case you do screw....I mean in case they do go bad.

Well I don't know because I haven't bought any. I'll let you do your own research and then draw from that your own conclusions. I just typed in L16 Battery and started doing some reading. I have researched large solar installation setups designed to power commercial buildings and in many photographs, there they are, row upon row of great big L16 batteries. I have thought about cost vs the Costco discount brand batteries prices. If, and I do say if, these L16 6 volts will last 7 to 10 years well I see a huge savings over the long run, not to mention peace of mind and minimal aggavation. Also, my motivation may be geared somewhat differently. I am not a fatalist but I do dabble in history to some extent. From what I am seeing today in world and economic events and comparing these to historical events I see a great potential for things to go south I might say. In the event that some calamity occurs things taken for granted ie; Costco, affordable batteries, etc, etc may be nearly impossible to attain or to costly. So with that said I am looking at long term reliable performance vs cost. A 1 year life span battery simply is not acceptable and I am actively seeking alternatives. Right now I am soldering leads to tiny 1/16 inch X 1/16 inch white LEDs. I link these together, solder in a resistor and I get one really bright light that runs off of 12 volt batteries with an almost undetectable loss of battery power. Best part is the LEDs average life is 10,000 hours. Every aspect of living without support from the outside I am actively investigating. Some have worked out, others have not. The L16 batteries, if I can find a way to get them, will be tested and I'll let everyone know how they do.

I currently run twelve L16-2V RE's . They are great. I truely believe that the investment is warranted. The contruction of the batteries is specificly for this application and I do believe the longevity will be here. I bought mine from USA battery sales out of California. They are by the trojan factory. They will sell them to you in 6 packs or as singles. Being 2v I bought my first 6 as a set. Then I added to the bank one cell at a time until I got 12 and split them into two 12v banks.


You can buy them with or without cores. If you by them without a core they charge you an extra $65 for each L16. you can turn in 3 standard 12v batteries as one core for a L16. So.. my first 6 pack was without a core and I paid for it. My next 6 were with cores and I was able to scrape up 18 12v batteries to use as cores. I did this with the help of my circle of friends and my work. I asked everybody I knew if they had any old batteries they wanted to get rid of. Some people had old ones and was happy to give them away.. others I paid $5 each for.. but either way it worked out great.


If I have a vote.. go for the L16-2V's   They are designed for this and you will not look back. My battery bank with 12 of these units is 2220 AH  at 12v.  There are little differences to working with these cells, but they are the very best.

I am so glad to hear that someone else has come to the same conclusion as I about batteries. I didn't want to come off as a know it all but I had done a lot of research and found that the L16s really were the way to go. Though I had not bought any myself, reading about them in comparison to say Costco or Walmart batteries, well they just aren't the same as the price clearly indicates. Kind of like hitting the Auto-Bahn in a 72 Beatle as opposed to say, an Aston Martin. I would like to know a couple of things if you don't mind. First is about the lifespan. From what I have read the L16s will last 7 to 10 years and maybe more if used lightly. Second, and this is but a theory I have, is that when fully charged these L16s will out last any regular deep cycle battery from your local discount store. By outlast I mean they will run your inverter for a much longer period before lights start flashing and alarms start sounding. Let me know if I am correct in this assessment. So you are running 12 2 volt? I was thinking 12 6 volt but if you say 2 volt is better I will start doing some more research. My biggest reason for leaning toward 6 volt was that I only needed two to get going. If I do 2 volt it might be a year before I can get enough to install. I'll see what I can drum up. Firearms and ammo have been the priority for a while, I may have to switch gears.

I myself has eyeballed some of these L16, 420Ah batteries By Trojan, what I have been thinking was getting 4 of these beast. 840 Ah at 12 volt would be plenty for me. Plus I do plan on adding 2 more 125 watt panels. At that mark and with my calculations that will be the end of my Solar plans Unless I go for 2 Panel arrays. Just those 4 batteries would give me 10 kw in battery storage, and 5 kw usable energy at 50 % use.

That is some very useful info. 420 ah are the bad boys. Just 4 will yeild 10kw? That's cool. I may not have to buy as many as I thought.

Yep 10 K,....Heck if you do the math Moe and his Battery bank has 26 Kw in storage and 13 kw usable at 50% discharged.

Gees, with that much storage I would seriously move over to a 220 volt inverter. And to think I initially started out just wanting a way to charge NIMH flashlight batteries. Now with just a little investment, a lot of work and even more learning over the last year, my house is the only one within miles that looks as if nothing happened when the grid power goes down. I envy Moe and his setup. I will strive to make mine like his. I need to get off my backside and start churning out some more panels. The one thing that really holds me back is the price of the Syl-Gard encapsulant. I need three containers for each panel. Oh well, in for a penny, in for a pound.
